Frequently Asked Questions

Is the modem really free on these NBN plans?
Yes — the plans listed include a modem/router at no extra upfront charge. "Free unconditional" means you keep it regardless of contract. "Free with contract" means the modem is tied to a contract period; if you cancel early you may be charged a modem-recovery fee — check the provider's Critical Information Summary.
What happens to the modem if I cancel early?
For unconditional free modems, nothing — it is yours to keep. For contract-bundled modems, most providers charge a device recovery fee if you cancel within the minimum term. The Critical Information Summary (CIS) from each provider has the exact figure — click through to the carrier's own page for that document.
Do I need a mesh system for my home?
A mesh system (or Wi-Fi 6/7 router) improves wireless coverage across larger homes. If your home has multiple floors, thick walls, or dead spots, a mesh kit from an NBN provider can replace a standalone modem/router. Bill Hero lists a small number of plans that include a full mesh or Wi-Fi 6/7 system — see the featured section below.
Can I bring my own modem (BYO) instead?
Most NBN providers allow BYO-compatible modems that support the correct WAN type for your technology (VDSL2 for FTTN/FTTB, RJ-45 WAN for FTTP/HFC/FW). If you already own a good modem, a BYO-modem plan may be cheaper per month — compare the monthly cost against plans on this page to decide.
Which retailer offers the best free-modem NBN deal?
Based on current data, the cheapest qualifying plan is the cheapest qualifying plan shown at the top of the table above. Bill Hero sorts all plans by monthly price, so the cheapest option is always at the top of the table. There are multiple qualifying plans — compare contract length and modem type before switching.
What doesn't count as a free modem in this list?
Bill Hero excludes: modems offered as an optional add-on purchase, optional modem rental (monthly charge), plans that require you to bring your own modem, and plans where the modem is advertised in marketing copy but not confirmed in the provider's Critical Information Summary. Only plans with a verifiable free-modem inclusion are listed here.
