About AGL

AGL is Australia's largest electricity generator and one of the "big three" energy retailers, serving millions of customers across the NEM. It operates a large legacy coal generation fleet alongside an accelerating renewables build-out, targeting 12 GW of new clean capacity by 2035 as it prepares to close Bayswater (2033) and Loy Yang A (2035). AGL offers GreenPower-accredited options and bundled telco services. In 2023, AGL was penalised $25 million for overcharging welfare recipients through the Centrepay system — the largest single Centrepay penalty in AER history.

The company was formed in 2006 when the original Australian Gas Light Company merged and restructured with Alinta, creating two separate entities. In 2022, a proposed demerger into Accel Energy (coal) and AGL Australia (retail) was abandoned after failing to secure shareholder approval.
