About ENGIE
ENGIE (formerly Simply Energy) is a major Australian energy retailer serving over 700,000 customer accounts across five states, backed by French energy company ENGIE SA. ENGIE was the first major Australian retailer to exit coal generation and has invested in wind, solar, and battery storage — including the 250 MW Goorambat East Solar Farm and the 200 MW Pelican Point BESS. The company offers GreenPower-accredited products and was ranked first nationally for call centre customer experience in 2025. ENGIE is foreign-owned (France). The Hazelwood coal mine rehabilitation remains a legacy environmental liability for the company.

ENGIE Australia (formerly Simply Energy) is the Australian retail arm of ENGIE SA, a French multinational energy company. The Australian business was founded in 2005 as a joint venture between International Power and the NSW government-owned EnergyAustralia, later wholly acquired by International Power (2007), which was then progressively bought by GDF Suez (now ENGIE) between 2010-2012. It rebranded from Simply Energy to ENGIE in 2024.
Generation Assets

Regulatory Issues
No major AER court-imposed penalties identified for the Australian retail entity. ENGIE's parent company globally was fined 553 million euros by the European Commission in 2009 (as GDF Suez) over a market-sharing deal. In Australia, the Hazelwood mine rehabilitation project is under regulatory assessment via an Environment Effect Statement (EES) in Victoria.
