About Powershop

Powershop launched in 2012 with an app-based energy retail model offering flexible "powerpack" purchasing. Originally 100% renewable and backed by NZ's Meridian Energy, it was sold to Shell in 2022, leading some climate-concerned customers to switch away. Powershop continues to offer GreenPower-accredited products and maintains its digital platform under Shell Energy's ownership. Powershop was fined $542,400 for life-support customer compliance failures.

Bill Hero is an independent comparison service: we list every retailer that publishes pricing through CDR, and we don't take placement fees from Powershop or any other retailer. Rates below are sourced from CDR and refreshed daily.

Australian Ownership

no

Powershop Australia was launched in 2012 as an online-only green energy retailer, originally owned by Meridian Energy Limited — a New Zealand government-owned electricity generator and retailer. In 2022, Meridian sold Powershop Australia to Shell Energy (a subsidiary of Shell plc) in a deal that saw Shell acquire the Powershop retail business while infrastructure investor ICG acquired Meridian's Australian renewable generation assets. The sale attracted significant customer backlash, with Powershop losing thousands of customers who objected to Shell's fossil fuel credentials.

Generation Assets

null (Powershop is a pure electricity retailer. Generation assets were separated in the 2022 Shell acquisition: Shell took the retailer and customers, while ICG took the portfolio of renewable generation assets. Powershop now sources its electricity from the wholesale market.)
