Ergon Energy is a 100% Queensland Government-owned entity, operating as a subsidiary of Energy Queensland Limited (established 2016). Formed in 1999 from six regional Queensland electricity boards. In 2007, the Queensland Government sold Ergon's contestable retail customers (~50,000) to AGL, but Ergon continued as the default provider for regional Queensland. It remains legislatively required to sell electricity at government-set Notified Prices, overseen by the Queensland Competition Authority.
Generation Assets
Minimal direct generation. Owns and operates the Barcaldine gas-fired power station in central Queensland and 33 stand-alone power stations for remote communities not connected to the main grid. Primarily a distribution and retail utility, not a generator.

Regulatory Issues
AER fined Ergon $135,600 for alleged breaches of life support rules. In 2025, the Federal Court upheld an AER investigatory notice against Ergon Energy Queensland regarding potential overcharging of Centrepay customers on closed accounts — an ongoing investigation.
